In recent years, people in Dehradun have started feeling a growing sense of concern. Various reports and local discussions suggest that crime in the city is increasing, and many of the accused are not originally from Uttarakhand. This raises an important question: why are criminals from different states choosing Dehradun as a safe place to hide or operate?
Recent Incidents Raising Concern
Recently, cases have come to light where individuals involved in crimes like robbery and gang activities were found living in Dehradun with their families while committing offences like train robberies in other states. In another shocking case, a violent incident led to the death of a young MBA student from Tripura in Dehradun after a brutal attack in 2025, which triggered nationwide outrage. A 45-year-old gangster from Jharkhand with over 50 criminal cases was shot dead in broad daylight outside a premium gym in a prime location. A 23 old girl was brutally killed with a sharp weapon.
There have also been reports of repeated murders and criminal activities happening in central areas of the city, not just isolated outskirts. Citizens and social groups have openly said that criminals seem to be operating “without fear” even near important government locations. In 2025–26, Uttarakhand police also arrested several wanted criminals from different states who had been hiding or operating in the region. A Pattern Over the Last Two Years Looking at the past two years, a pattern becomes visible: Criminals involved in serious crimes (including murder, drug trafficking, and theft) have been caught in Uttarakhand despite being linked to other states. Small and big interstate gangs have been detected operating in and around Dehradun. Violent incidents, including murders and assaults, have increased public anxiety. Road rage incidents have spiked high and again locals are becoming uncomfortable moving out with families. This suggests that the issue is not limited to isolated cases but may be part of a broader trend.
WHY DEHRADUN?
There are several possible reasons why criminals may prefer Dehradun and Uttarakhand:
1. Peaceful Image of the State: Uttarakhand is known as a calm and peaceful state. Because of this image, criminals may believe they can stay under the radar more easily compared to big metro cities.
2. Rapid Urban Growth: Dehradun has grown quickly in recent years. With more people moving in, it becomes harder to track who is new and who is not.
3. Easy Connectivity: The city is well connected to states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Punjab. This makes movement easy for criminals operating across state borders.
4. Rental Living and Anonymous Stay: It is relatively easy to rent houses without strict background checks. This allows outsiders to settle quietly without attracting attention.
5. Limited Policing Pressure Compared to Metros: Compared to cities like Delhi or Mumbai, criminals may feel there is less surveillance and lower risk of immediate detection.
6. Unrecognised slums are increasing: Primarily due to large-scale rural-to-urban migration, with people coming from less developed states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Odisha.
Public Concern Is Growing
Many residents now feel that crime is becoming more frequent and bold. Discussions on social platforms and local protests show that people are worried about safety and law enforcement effectiveness. The fear is not just about crime itself, but about the possibility that Dehradun is slowly becoming a “safe zone” for criminals from other states.
What Needs to Be Done?
To address this issue, some important steps could be considered:
> Strict police verification for tenants
> Better intelligence sharing between states
> Stronger surveillance in key areas
> Faster legal action against offenders
> Increased public awareness and reporting
